lady in front of a mirror
2026This painting is again inspired by a photo by the Parisian photographer Brassai. This time taken in a brothel of one of the employees
The two friends
2026This figurine is inspired by the wrestler of the Italian sculptor Emilio Greco whose work I also like to see and use. Of course I have given it my own "twist" again!
The alternative tupperware party
2026Again originally a photo (Memphis housewives meet & compare recently purchased weapons) , this time by the British photographer Zed Nelson from his book "gun nation" made in the year 2000. I found it an intriguing and also bizarre image again, and I thought I want to try painting it and thereby draw some attention to it. I placed it in a baroque, old-fashioned frame.
The ballroom
2026This painting is composed of various "parts" from existing paintings of among other things the Dutch painter Kees van Dongen, and Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec, the ballroom was conceived. There is a 2nd hand fitting frame around it.
the dans
2026Inspired by various works by various German expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and George Grosz and others whose work I also like to see and use for my own creations
the boys & the girls
2026Again derived from a photo, this time from one of my favorite photographers and example for my own (street) photowork Ed van der Elsken. The photo was taken in the Jordaan/ Amsterdam in the 1950s, where people were still dancing on the street at the time
Birds of paradise
2026Also this painting is again derived from / inspired by photos, this time by two portrait photos of circus artists (a sword swallower & a trapeze artist) made by the New York photographer Diane Arbus. I have placed them in a kind of impressionist landscape, in the tree on the left is a "real" bird of paradise!
The pilgrimage
2026This painting too is derived from a photograph, it was taken by the American photographer Alex Webb in the year 1989. It comes from a report about the people who gather annually at the waterfalls "Saut d'Eau" in Haiti for a three-day pilgrimage where both christian and voodoo "followers" come seeking and to pray for healing and some luck! I made it intended as a kind of symbolic image of man who is (still) in contact with the rest of nature & the elements. But also because I find it a beautiful and intriguing photograph.
The city
2026This painting is derived from work by the German expressionists George Grosz & Bruno Voigt. The whole is based on a drawing of George Grosz, but I have also made my own version of it
The tau butterfly in the arboretum
2026
The party in the fantasy forest
2026This painting is inspired by an amateur photograph from the 1960s that I found. The two dancing people are in this photo, the rest is made up! The photo is also available as a postcard through the publisher Art Unlimited in Amsterdam.
the harbour view
2026This painting is derived from a photo-postcard made by the Rotterdam (aerial) photographer Bart Hofmeester in the year 1971. It comes from my collection of images from that period that I often "consult" as a source of inspiration for my paintings and other work
The boss
2026This figurine symbolizes the human desire to keep nature under control and to be the boss over it! The horse is sagging and warped by the (excess) weight of the man.
walking the dog
2026Also derived from diverse works by German expressionists from the first half of the last century
3 figures
2025This painting is derived from a number of photos made by the Belgian photographer Harry Gruyaert, the landscape is 1 photo and the 3 figures ( people) come from other photos taken by him in various places around the world. I put all this together in the painting as a kind of ode to the photographer! It is painted in acrylic paint on wood with a 2nd hand frame around it.
ATTENTION
2025This figurine came about because I regularly saw / see someone passing by ( in the street were I live), while walking his dog. Useally looking at his mobile phone while he is walking! Sometimes I fantasize that he steps in a dog turd, preferably his own dog's! It is also a kind of "portrait" of modern man, many of whom just like him look at their (mobile) phone during all kinds of activities and pay no attention to what is around them!
cafe Lehnitz
2025This painting is again derived from a photo this time made by the Swedish photographer Anders Petersen. At the end of the 1960s, he made a reportage about the visitors of café Lehnitz on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg (Germany). It's one of my favorite photo books
The twins
2025This figurine is derived from a painting by the Haitian (outsider)painter Castera Bazile, naturally I have made my own version of it in clay, colored with acrylic paint.
The bathwoman
2025Clay / ceramics, painted with acrylic paint
The photographer
2025This is a small sculpture inspired by a portrait from the Parisian photographer Brassai taken in the year 1931 somewhere om the street in Paris while he was working. I enjoy looking at his photographic work, and this sculpture is a kind of ode to him!
The harvest
2025This is also originally a photo taken by the British photographer P.H. Emerson in the year 1886. It comes from the series "life and landscape on the Norfolk Broads", nowadays a nature and recreation area, but at that time primarily agricultural land where people were still "truly" in contact with the surrounding nature an could farm on a small scale.
The connection
2025This figurine is derived from a photo taken by the American photographer Mike Disfarmer in the year 1943 of Mr. and Mrs. Barger from Herber Springs in Arkansas (USA). I also sometimes use photography as an example in my ceramics.
The walk through the fantasy forest
2025This is an imagined landscape with diverse flora & fauna, even underwater!
the businessman and his greatgreatgre...grandmother
2025This painting was created by an image that was already in the frame of a reproduction of a medieval painting with the young woman as depicted in my painting, it was nog signed. The young man (businessman) in the background comes from an advertisement in the weekly magazine Panorama from the 70s
The jungle / forest
2025Fantasy forest with diverse flora and fauna
The tropical forest
2025
pigeons in Central park
2025This painting is derived from 2 photos, the boy with the toy handgrenade comes from a photo of the New York photographer Diane Arbus. The billboard in the background comes from a photo made by the American photographer Margaret Bourke-White. I gave the boy a "Trumpian" haircut, it has become a kind of visual commentary on the current political "climate" in the USA and the rest of the world!
The weeping Frenchman
2025This is originally a photo again, it is actually a so-called "still image" from a documentary made in May 1940. The weeping man (Jérome Barzotti) and the other people were standing along the road in Marseille while the French troops were on their way to the port to embark for North-Africa, fleeing from the nazi's! It is a strong and iconic image of the effects and influence of war on (ordinary) people.
Lady on canapé
2024This painting is derived from a painting made by the Dutch painter Jan Sluijters. I made my own (temporary) version of it and only "used" the lady on the sofa, the rest (interior) is made up.
The peasant wedding
2024This painting is derived from a photo by the Dutch photographer Tinus Swinkels. He took many portrait photos of peasants in and around the village (Lieshout) where he lived, this photo is from the year 1919. I made up the landscape around it
The hat shop
2024Originally a photo again, this time by an unknown photographer. The photo was probably taken in the late 19th century / early 20th century in the Kalverstraat / Amsterdam
The artist and his wife in the fantasy forest
2024This painting is inspired by various other paintings from impressionism and the work of the naive painter Henri (le douanier) Rousseau.
the cafe
2024I made this painting for an art competition for which you had to make something that was derived from Matisse's work. I used his painting "The piano player and the checkers" from 1924 as an example and added various other elements from other paintings to it. acyrl paint on wood with 2nd hand frame
Le chapeau rose
2024I made this painting for my wife's birthday, it is derived from a painting by the Dutch painter Kees van Dongen. She especially likes his paintings of the BIG-eyed women

the painter and his muse
2023This was originally a photo of Matisse in his studio in Paris taken by the photographer Brassai in the 1930s
The family!
2022Also originally a photo, this time from the New York city (street) photographer Garry Winogrand, the subject is a so-called "interracial" couple. The photo is taken in Central Park in the year 1967, in that year the constitution in the USA (finally) was amended and the ban on marrying someone with a different ethnic background came to an end! Apart from this , I thought it was/is an intriguing photo.
The open house
2022This painting was created as a result of a drawing by the German expressionist George Grosz (the woman on the sofa). The rest is fantasized
the paradise
2022This painting is inspired by an image of Adam & Eve, I depicted them in my own way in a kind of fantasy garden with various flora and fauna. The birds are existing birds!
La belle de nuit
2022This young lady is in a photo of the Parisian photographer Brassai whose work I love to see. Among other thing, he took photos of prostitutes and their customers both on the street and in brothels in the 1920s & 1930s. This was a street prostitue
